The Charlotte CIO of the Year ORBIE Awards

Armed with more than twenty years of extensive experience in healthcare’s digital transformation, business leader Craig Richardville is the owner and president of Richardville Consulting, LLC. In recognition of his contribution to the advancement of digital transformation in healthcare, Craig Richardville was an awardee of the 2017 Charlotte CIO of the Year Award.

The Charlotte CIO of the Year ORBIE Awards is one-of-its-kind in recognizing the efforts of technological executives. The award is given to chief information officers who have displayed excellent technological leadership. Nominees go through a rigorous selection process through a panel composed of former recipients of the award. The panel considers the size and scope of the nominees’ responsibilities, their effectiveness in leadership and management, the business value they have created with the use of technological innovations, and their involvement in industry and community endeavors.

To qualify for the award, nominees must be a CIO or hold an equivalent position as a senior IT executive for at least one year at the time of the nomination. Being a CIO, he or she must be a member of the top management and be primarily responsible for the IT operations of a Charlotte-headquartered organization or of a subsidiary that is based in Charlotte.

An MBA graduate of the University of Toledo, Craig Richardville began his accomplished career in the information analysis and services sector as lead systems analyst for USX-Marathon Oil Company in 1986. In his position with the Findlay, Ohio, company, he developed procedures to design and test computer programs and systems. Craig Richardville also spearheaded initiatives to improve workflow efficiency during this time.

As his career developed, Craig Richardville transitioned into the healthcare information sector when he accepted a position as lead senior systems analyst with ProMedica Health System in Toledo, Ohio. Over the next decade, Mr. Richardville held a series of positions of increasing responsibility with the company, eventually serving as the vice president and executive director of ProMedica’s for-profit division, Vanguard Health Ventures.

Craig Richardville drew upon this experience when he joined Carolinas HealthCare System as the senior director of information services in 1997. He went on to serve Carolinas HealthCare for two decades, most recently as senior vice president and chief information and analytics officer for the last 11 of those years. In this role, in addition to information services, he guided other areas including the company’s health information management, cybersecurity and clinical engineering programs. His numerous accomplishments in this position included leading the system's digital transformation with achieving HIMSS EMRAM Level 7 for Acute and Ambulatory realizing millions of dollars in federal reimbursements, many innovative consumer strategies including consuming patient-generated data through home device integration, one of the first in the country to use Amazon Alexa and voice input for home access to patients, analytics as a foundation for population health and the transition to value, and many affordability initiatives including optimization of the EMR saving 40,000 nursing hours per year. Craig Richardville did all of this while maintaining an operating contribution greater than peer organizations and maintaing top decile teammate engagement reaching as high as the 99th in multiple years.
